A Sustainable Future

Sustainability is embedded in the entire rejuvenation of the site. All planning incorporates initiatives with rigorous benchmarks for environmental, social and economic sustainability. Planning proposals have been appraised against an international benchmarking tool, with results showing that the project is well on the way to meeting its aspirations of global leadership.

The MRA has invested substantially in the major remediation of the site. The result will be a landmark transformation from a once contaminated industrial site to one that meets the highest standards required for residential development.

Environmental sustainability will be addressed in a number of ways:

  • Water efficiency and reuse systems with stormwater harvesting, rainwater reuse and provision of non-potable water to properties via a ‘purple pipe’.
  • Specification of infrastructure materials to address their carbon footprint with a preference for local materials with a high recyclable content.
  • Green Star ratings to drive sustainability standards for new built development.
  • Exploration of solar power opportunities.

Planning has even taken the humble rubbish bin into consideration with virtually wheelie bin-free streets proposed.

Social sustainability will also be enhanced through a number of measures, including:

  • Approaches to integrate with the existing Midland community.
  • Continuous improvements in health and safety.
  • Crime prevention through the application of environmental design (CPTED) principles.
  • Universal access audits for all public works.

Economic sustainability initiatives will be driven by strategies to enhance local employment diversity, raise skill levels and generate further job creation, together with policies for sourcing local goods and services.
